|
|
I was backing up my SNES collection with my SF7 recently, and came across something quite unusual with Mario Kart. It's a 4M game, which ordinarily fits in one bank; however, when I dumped it, it produced two 2M ROMs, taking up two banks, with the filenames SF4223XA and SF4223XB.
What does the X signify, and why did it need to be split this way? I haven't seen any other games I've dumped have that letter or be split like this. This isn't any problem for gameplay (I usually play from the cart anyway), I'm mainly just curious to know what this means. |

Game Doctors split all HiROMs regardless of their size into two parts. It's possible however to use another unofficial header (with the same mapping as the official header) allowing <=8M HiROMs to use only one bank/file. Why Bung did this from SF3-SF7 nobody knows.
The "X" is just a meaningless placeholder to make the file name 8.3. |

I see, thank you. That explains why uCON64 was able to make a single-file version of it. |
