Just wondering if anyone has a definitive list of all the games that need cracking and the types of protections used. I didn't realize until just recently how protected Mother 2/Earthbound just are.
http://starmen.net/mother2/gameinfo/antipiracy/
From what I can recall Demon's Crest and DKC had some tricky protections that screwed with the player. DC with it's unbeatable first boss and DKC with an obstacle placed so you couldn't finish level 1-1. Then you had the generic Anti-Piracy messages in Super Metroid, Claymates etc..
I think, if it hasn't been documented already it should be with visual examples if nothing more than for posterity. I personally find it all pretty interesting.
Also.. which versions are being passed around as current romssets for the "No Intro" and "Good" sets ? Are they cracked or 1:1 copies of the carts? _________________ www.videogameobsession.com |

There are only two types of copier protection: SRAM size detection and bad memory map detection (most copiers don't emulate open-bus and ROM mirroring.) And they both of course can be implemented many many ways, thankfully they are often implemented one or two ways so programs like uCON64 can crack them easily.
A while ago dbjh tested some games on his PAL console and SWC:
http://ucon64.sourceforge.net/ucon64/SWC-compatibility.txt
Note: NMI frequency protection has nothing to do with copiers and is usually there for a valid reason--the game won't work on a different TV system, some people may somehow not know this.
ROMs distributed on the net should be legitimate protected dumps, especially since that's the supposed mission of ROM groups.
If you're interested in seeing the protections documented, noone's stopping you :) Look at uCON64 for the most common hex strings and their "cracked" replacements and disassemble them to see how they work. I don't think you'll find them all that elaborate or clever though. |

I used to document and test a ton of snes games. I just don't have the time or patience anymore though . I just figured someone had made some examples with graphic examples of the different protections. If I get motivated I might work on something. I am still trying to locate all my old "contributions". Here's one of them...

nah, it's just the tabs and stuff that didn't carry over.. no biggie. I am going to get all my copier related stuff and put it on my page eventually. I also scanned a bunch of old Console Express newsletters and other copier ads. I figure other people might get a kick out of seeing it again. I could be wrong though. _________________ www.videogameobsession.com |
